Martineau Gardens, Edgabston.

Had a visit to Martineau Gardens in sunny Edgabston today which is holding The 2012 Birmingham Honey Show today and tomorrow. Martineau Gardens is a great little place which has a wildlife area that is a designated Site Of Local Importance and is a rich habitat for birds, bats, badgers, foxes and hedgehogs. There is also a hot house, orchard, vegetable plots, wildflower meadow, pond, resident bee hives, lots of old established trees and a very nice bird hide.

Birds seen today were, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Jay (including a squabbling pair), Nuthatch (including another squabbling pair), Bullfinch (female), Wren, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Robin, Blackbird and Woodpigeon. There was also at least one water rat feeding off scraps from the bird table, talking to one of the volunteers, he told me that unfortunately they have to culled once a year though because their numbers increase too much. It was also great to see the place buzzing with insects including many dragonflies and lots of colourful butterflies.

Like I said this is a great little place to visit, the area for the birds isn't that big but it is still rich in birds, especially Tits, Robins and Wrens, fortunately it also backs onto plenty of well kept large gardens that have plenty all important trees. It's free to get in and open all year round (except Public Holidays), Monday to Saturday - 10am to 4pm. On your visit you can also purchase some plants, vegetables, salads, fruits, jams, logs and compost and all the profits go straight back into the costs of running this charity.

For some reason my links aren't working as they normally do at the moment, so click on the following if you're interested and hopefully they'll work for you, Martineau Gardens and The 2012 Brmingham Honey Show.
