Babbs Mill Nature Reserve, Kingshurst.

A trip to Kingshurst today for a walk around the lake, the Yorks Wood and along a stretch of the River Cole.

Highlight of the day was seeing a juvenile Green Woodpecker foraging for ants on the school playing fields adjacent to the wood, it looked very resplendent with it's speckled appearance while scoffing down ants like there was no tomorrow. It was also the very first time I'd ever seen a Green Woodpecker at this location, in fact you don't see many in Birmingham at all.

Birds spotted today were, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Willow Warbler, Blue Tit, Great Tit, House Sparrow, Robin, House Martin, Swallow, Jay, Blackbird, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Woodpigeon, Feral Pigeon, Grey Heron, Mute Swan, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Moorhen, Coot, Tufted Duck, Mallard, Canada Goose, Domestic Goose, Cormorant as well as the following juveniles, Green Woodpecker, Cygnet (7), days old Ducking (2), Tufted Duck (10), Blackbird, House Sparrow and Woodpigeon

As in most years the House Sparrow population here is absolutely thriving, they have definitely had a good year this year because there is a small bush they congregate in by the side of the lake in the car park where there was at least forty today with half of them being juveniles with many more still flying about in the trees and the other side of the lake along the river.

For anybody that knows Birmingham, I was at The Fox and Goose shopping centre yesterday morning at about 8 a.m. when I was greeted to a great sight of over a hundred Starling scratting about, unfortunately, by the roadside and in the road totally obvious to all the oncoming traffic, but fortunately it was by the traffic lights so the traffic had to slow down anyway and none were hurt in the time I was there. Even though behind the houses adjacent to the roadside is Washwood Heath School with huge playing fields, I'd still say it's rare to see so many Starling in an urban environment.
